What should you blog about?
Ah, that is the question isn’t it? (another question that might be on your mind is what this has do with sudden betrayal, don’t worry, I’ll get to that)
When you blog, you sometimes struggle with coming up with topics to write about.
I am certainly not going to tell you what topics to blog about, since only you know what your expertise is. Obviously you should always keep your focus on providing value for your target customer or client. You know what their pains and needs are. You know the solutions you provide. I stumbled on a tip that has made a huge difference for me.This one little tip will help you tap into the creativity and inspiration you already possess.
Back to the title of this post.
It is a quote from my favorite TV show, Firefly. (surprise, surprise) The context: “Wash” the pilot of the spaceship Serenity finds himself in one of those moments where nothing much is going on that needs his attention. He’s got a couple of toy dinosaurs on the ship console, and he starts playing a little game with them. Chatter between the two dinosaurs quickly devolves into all out attack, and this is where one says to the other, “Curse Your Sudden But Inevitable Betrayal”. He is free associating, having fun, being creative.
And this connects to blogging how?
I find that I am at my most creative, when I am not in front of the computer screen, ready to write for my blog. My very best ideas come sometimes come to me in the garden, my hands covered in dirt, or in the process of harvesting, my mind in that zen state I personally reach only in the garden. For Wash, creativity and playfulness flowed in a moment of boredom, sitting at the helm of the ship, with no urgent matters to attend to.
For you inspiration might strike at entirely different moments, and there might indeed be an element of play involved. Perhaps great ideas pop into your head while you are driving home from work, maybe it’s when you’re in the shower, or when you’re cooking, or when you watch your children play, or when you are out for a walk. Or if you’re like me, you might be watching a favorite TV show and notice something that totally relates to your business, maybe not in a way that would be obvious to anyone else, but you see the connection and you are suddenly inspired to write. The point being, ideas come to us when our mind roams, when we do something we love and enjoy, when we are immersed in life.
You have the time, but no ideas?
Later you finally find a quiet moment and you sit down to write that great blog post. You have the time finally, or you have set time aside. You might even be in the mood, if you’re lucky, but… your mind draws a blank. What should you blog about today? All those great headlines and subjects you thought of when you were not at your keyboard are suddenly gone, like a wisp of smoke in the wind.
This happened to me too many times to count. I knew I had a great idea, maybe several great ideas. But when I sat down to write, they were just out of reach, gone, vanished from my mind. When finally I had time to devote to writing them down, nothing but a void in my head.
One of the most common complaints for people who want to get started blogging is writers block. They sit down to get started, and … nothing… they can’t even get started. Yes, I have been there. Too many times. I know that feeling all to well.
Bridging the gap between inspiration and writing
When I uncovered this one little gem of a tip it allowed me to bridge the space between those moments of spontaneous inspiration that strike unexpectedly, when I have no time to blog about it, with the time I sit down to get some serious writing done.
The solution is so simple, that it almost seems silly. That’s they way great ideas often are. Now that I am practicing this, I can’t believe I did not implement this years ago. I wrote a short eBook you can download by signing up below. When you get going with blogging send me link to your blog, won’t you?
